Quote"The absence of my first albums pained me more and more. For five or six years, no one even spoke to me about them. Many thought that the first one was from 2001... Also, what made me tilt is that three or four cities wanted to give me a medal for what I had brought to the culture, but I could not answer positively, because what I had brought did not exist ", explained, last July, MC Solaar in an interview with the Parisian.

He's a French rapper who was quite popular in Europe in the 90s (Missy Elliott - All N My Grill). I don't know if there are any fans but I just found out his music is rereleased and added to Spotify! He had a lot of troubles with the rights of his music. He's one of the few rappers where I don't even have to understand the language, I have always loved his flow and the vibe of the music.

I have been listening to the album Prose Combat a lot on YouTube. I love the jazzy sounds, reminds me of Gangstar/Guru/Pharcyde. The vinyls were so rare and expensive so I'm glad there are finally new releases.

I remember the first time I heard him was the Missy Elliott feature he did on All n My Grill (I think in the USA they promoted the version with Big Boi). It's a shame they didn't add the video or song yet. [youtube]

who is this person ?

I don't expect anyone to know him, but it's a nice recommendation for hiphop lovers who like sounds of Guru, DJ premier, Lupe Fiasco, Pharcyde etc. He is a French rapper with a very jazzy style. I think because his music never was added to streaming he definitely never got the attention he deserved. (Plus it's always harder if you are not rapping in English.)

Pitchfork just gave his album an 8. I'm glad he's finally getting some recognition.

Quote
That's not to say that Prose Combat doesn't take influences from the U.S.: The album's jazz-funk-heavy production, boom-bap beats, and elongated scratches (at the hands of producer/DJ Jimmy Jay) clearly owe a huge debt to DJ Premier, while Solaar's nimble yet relaxed flow, like a man calmly picking him way through a raging torrent of honey, is reminiscent of Guru. (It is no surprise at all that Guru got Solaar involved in his Jazzmatazz project in 1993). But Solaar proved definitively on Prose Combat that the French language, with its throaty (and very un-Anglophone) "r"s, nasal vowels, and constantly evolving slang and even stress patterns, could bring a beautifully melodic trill to hip-hop that differentiated it from American styles.

[...]

This is a record that looked to U.S. rap and decided it could make changes—an album that took on the Anglo lyrical template and won. Twenty-seven years later, Prose Combat is a "Vive la différence" of musical diversity that positively purrs in its victory.
