Long lasting cultural impact makes you a legend. That's it. It's how you are remembered.
Pretty much this and having timeless records. The likes of Elvis, Madonna, Bob Marley, MJ, etc. are consistently brought up and emulated today. They're brands even after life. Those are legends. A lot of the names mentioned in here are just artists who had a nice run tbh. They're not legendary. Stats and awards don't make a legend. They were a moment in time. Broke a record, cute but no one's trying to be like them in 2016. Bob Marley died without winning big awards yet he's remembered and quoted like he's still. Same with 2Pac and Biggie.
Like you can have a big record that was sampled 5000 times and NOT be a legend. I think artists like Marvin Gaye and Isley Brothers are legendary because they had more than big records. They created a feeling in millions of people that is felt even today when listening to them. A lot of the names mentioned in here can't say that.
